If you're on any sort of non-rev travel (buddy pass, companion pass, etc.), you'll always be seated in the best available class. If there's a first class seat open, you'll get it, even if there are coach seats also open. If there aren't first class seats available, you'll get a coach seat if there is one.I've found that it's pretty difficult to get a first class seat on most domestic flights, as lots of frequent fliers get those first, but on international flights, it's easy as pie. In fact, I've never non-revved internationally and NOT been seated in first class. Just came back from tokyo - first class all the way. It was awesome!good luck.
